La Mesa
lies directly to the east of the City of San Diego, 15 miles from
downtown San Diego. It’s placement among the mountains makes climate
here ideal, with just enough ocean breeze to sooth the desert heat.
Areas of La Mesa include Grossmont, nestled in the hills and Mount Helix
developed as a residential area with farming for avocados and boasts
larger custom homes.
The top of
Mount Helix provides an incredible
360-degree view of San Diego County and is a great spot for a wedding.
Residents are blessed with rolling hills and beautiful hillside
views. There is an artists community on the eastern edge of town, a
farmers market every week, and two community colleges that offer an
abundance of courses & activities open to enriching the general public.
La Mesa
schools range from the 50th to the90th percentile with
dedicated areas of high achievement. Science and Technology have been
emphasized with new labs and equipment throughout the El Cajon City
School District, where La Mesa students attend. A recent addition to La
Mesa is the Ray and Joan Kroc Community Center, benefiting families all
over the city as the largest community center in San Diego. Visitors
enjoy a performing arts center, an Olympic sized skating rink and pools
for race and diving. This new development will also draw commerce to its
territory.
La
Mesa is a major retail area for all of East County, home to the
Grossmont Center and the La Mesa Springs Shopping center. Downtown La
Mesa's park-like, pedestrian-friendly environment is designed as an
attractive shopping destination, and plans are underway to expand
landscaping. Renovations in 2001 added plants and irrigation along with
curb maintenance and fancy lighting.
The
Grossmont Trolley Station is introducing development to include retail
shops, services and highly concentrated residential units. Residents
work hard to maintain the friendly neighborhood that keeps visitors
coming from all over East County. There are also a growing number of
mid-rise office buildings that offer low-vacancy rates. All of these
factors create for La Mesa a thriving business environment.
